AT&T and the iPhone

From Facebook:

Quick question. I’m looking at getting the new iPhone. Should I wait until they open it up to other carriers instead of just AT&T? Have you been satisfied with your AT&T service all round?

Answer:

I have a love/hate relationship with AT&T. I love the iPhone but I detest AT&T’s service and network. Period. They suck. I am a former Verizon customer and migrated my number to AT&T just to get the iPhone and its capabilities. I can say without a doubt that Verizon’s CDMA and EVDO network are far superior to AT&T’s GSM – especially here in the southern region of the country. Verizon’s ads against AT&T – absolutely true.

However, the things that I can do with my iPhone make up for the sub-par coverage, congested 3G, and dropped calls. The iPhone allows me to do about 70% of my business from my phone – from accepting credit cards, remote support, blogging, facebook, twitter, etc. Most of the time, I can walk into a client’s office with just my iPhone now. Here are some posts I’ve made about that:

Waiting on the iPhone to go to other carriers will be a long wait though. Your best bet is either (1) get the iPhone, love it, and hate ATT or (2) if you are on Verizon get the Droid and stay with Google’s platform – which is the only thing that rivals the iPhone.
